Meet the Member - Ian Richards from Work to Live Financial Planning

Name of Business  Work to Live Financial Planning 

• Who are you?  A Chartered Financial Planner providing independent advice. 

• What sets you apart from the competition?  We put you and your family’s lives at the centre of the advice that we give, it is not about selling you are product, it is about understanding what you want to achieve and why, then putting a tailored plan in place in order to do so.    We focus on your life, not your money.  We also work on a fixed fee basis so will not charge more just because you have more money/assets. 

• How did the business come about?  I had worked for several financial advice firms and always felt there was a better and fairer way to give financial advice.  I also believe financial planning should be fun and focused on helping people live the best live they can, which I felt wasn’t the case at other firms where it was all about the assets people had.  The true value for clients comes from the planning which is what the business focuses on.  I also wanted to charge a fixed fee model, that was open and transparent (fees are on our website) rather than a % fee that most advice firms seem to charge.  The % model doesn’t fit with our values, as we don’t believe someone receiving the same service and value should pay more just because they have more money or that we have to implement a product to be paid. 

What are your main target markets?  We primarily work with business owners & entrepreneurs who are worried that they are not using their money in the best way to create a secure future, which would allow them to live their ideal life. 

• How long has your business been in existence?  A couple of months although I have been thinking about it for a couple of years at least.  I have been working as a Financial Planner for over 7 years. 

• How many staff do you employ?  Currently it is myself, although I do have some admin support.  I have set up the business so that I can focus my time on serving clients so I outsource any work I can.  I work through a network who provide me with compliance support so I can benefit from their expertise and spend my time doing the fun stuff like speaking with my clients! 

• What job or achievement makes you most proud?  Doing my job the right way by providing “real” financial planning, so clients say things like “you have given us peace of mind”, “certainity” or “the freedom to do the things we want”.  In some cases  it can actually change clients lives! 

• Where do you see the business being in five years?  Going from strength to strength by really adding value to our clients.  I would like to add a couple of team members but want to keep the business small and streamlined.  We will be working with a select number of ideal clients and providing an exceptional service, helping them live a great live whilst we enjoy the same.  I am also intrigue by the prospect of incorporating coaching into the service that we offer to clients. 

• Why Warrington?  I am excited for the growth and plans for the area.  I also live locally, love the area and not having to travel far is a massive plus! 

• Tell us one interesting thing about the business that might surprise us?  We don’t spend much time talking about investment performance or pretend we can pick the next hot funds. 

• Tell us one interesting thing about you that people might not know? (ie, hobbies, amusing fact, etc)  I was once airlifted of a mountain. 

• Brexit – good, bad, opportunity?  So tempting to avoid this landmine!  To be honest who actually knows, I think there could be opportunities but I just wish they would get on with it either way.  

• Fantasy dinner party – which six people alive or dead would you invite?  Barack Obama, Mohammed Ali, Alistair Cook, Ryan Reynolds, The Rock, Rita Ora.
