Meet the Member - John Storton, Yellow Spider Media

John Storton

Name of Business?
Yellow Spider Media

Who are you?
John Storton, Founder and MD

What sets you apart from the competition?
Yellow Spider Media works as an extension of a client’s team, rather than an external agency.  By working closely and regularly with the client, the understanding of the client’s culture, industry and strategy can be quickly learned to make sure the marketing messaging is right.

How did the business come about?
After working in numerous marketing roles, a local sports distribution company offered some part-time social media management work. After a conversation with the owner, rather than be employed by them, Yellow Spider Media was created, and I had my first client.

What are your main target markets?
Business owners or key decision makers that want to improve visibility online.

How long has your business been in existence?
Yellow Spider Media was formed in 2014

How many staff do you employ?
After a period of fantastic growth, we had a small team of 11. However, after a recent restructuring it is now just me working as a consultant to represent the company, with a great network of freelance content writers, graphic designers, videographers, and web developers on hand for larger projects.

What job or achievement makes you most proud?
Having a business that is almost 6 years old is some achievement! But Yellow Spider Media recently travelled to Romania to film a documentary for a UK animal charity and their celebrity ambassador. It is almost finished and will be screened to a number of high-profile guests in 2020 before being used by a number of influential organisations later in the year. Watch this space!

Where do you see the business being in five years?
Still based in Warrington! Ideally I’d still have all of our social media clients but be involved in larger-scale video projects. With the fast pace of the digital marketing world it’s possible the whole way in which we work will be completely different in 2025.

Why Warrington?
I was born and raised here and after spending 6 years abroad in Asia and South America I returned back to my hometown to start the business. It is a town full of talented, creative people and as long as everyone is keen to put Warrington on the map we can have a workforce to rival bigger cities.

Tell us one interesting thing about the business that might surprise us?
Although the spider name is often cited as being about ‘being on the web’ etc. it is actually a coincidence and simply named after a Devandra Banhart song called, ‘Little Yellow Spider’.

Tell us one interesting thing about you that people might not know?
In a previous life as a musician I was once due to share a stage with PSY (of Gangnam Style fame) before a gas explosion at a nearby factory caused the festival to be cancelled!

Fantasy dinner party – which six people alive or dead would you invite?
Mostly comedians or people who would like to have a good time, plus a couple of inspirational individuals: Wes Anderson, David Bowie, Jennifer Lawrence, Diane Morgan, Ricky Gervais, Brian Gittins (character)
