Meet the Member - Steve Upham from altspace

•

  • Name of Business altspace Co-working Office
  • Who are you?  I worked for 20 years in the media sector in London and visited some amazing collaborative venues and workspaces. I've always enjoyed working with small businesses and decided that I would like to start a company that fulfilled my passion for providing well designed properties which inspires businesses and workers.
  • What sets you apart from the competition? We offer fair and transparent prices and aim to be flexible with our members. This strengthens our clients and community improving the culture in the office.

  • How did the business come about? We started as a pop up group in Altrincham meeting weekly and then monthly. Further to a year in a temporary space and 3 years in our current Altrincham office we have decided to expand into Warrington.
  • What are your main target markets? Small businesses and startups
  • How long has your business been in existence? This is our forth year of trading
  • How many staff do you employ? We plan to have a team of 3, currently it's just me.
  • What job or achievement makes you most proud? Moving from London to startup in Cheshire was challenging however it's been incredibly rewarding. I used to have some very long commutes when I was balancing jobs.
  • Where do you see the business being in five years? I have the ambition to operate a number of co-working spaces in thriving towns in the North West. Members will then have a choice of venue when they are travelling.
  • Why Warrington? The town is a hotspot for new business and the regenerated Time Square project will be a hub for local people in the future. We are very happy to be launching in the town during such an exciting period.
  • Tell us one interesting thing about the business that might surprise us? We encourage membership across any sector and have welcomed private detectives, yoga teachers and a shepherd to our space.
  • Tell us one interesting thing about you that people might not know? (ie, hobbies, amusing fact, etc) Since moving to Cheshire I've developed a real passion for wild swimming. I often attend meetings with prominent goggle marks and water still in my ears!
  • Fantasy dinner party – which six people alive or dead would you invite? Richard Branson, Karen Brady, Chuck D, Phil Jackson ( basketball coach ), Barak Obama and Sharon Hogan.
